Flounder, Redfish, Black Drum, Speckled Trout, and Sheephead. Catching a little bit of everything on the inshore and backwaters of the lower Cape Fear.
The inshore and backwater fishing has been fair here in Southeastern NC over the past couple of weeks. We have had a crazy weather pattern with rain and southwest winds this past week and forecast for the next couple of days. We have been plugging along, dodging storms, and catching a few fish. Hopefully when this blows over the fishing will get back to normal. We are targeting a little bit of everything, from flounder to sheephead. Some days we have caught flounder, redfish, sheephead, speckled trout, red and black drum all in a days trip.
Flounder are hitting jigs and live mud minnows and menhaden. We have even caught flounder on spoons recently. Largest flounder this past week was 7.25 lbs.
Reds are on the flats and hitting jigs and topwater plugs on calm days. With the wind blowing lately we have caught reds in the creeks on spoons, jigs, topwater plugs, and Gulp baits. Live minnows have worked best lately on the reds.
Fishing fiddler crabs around structure has produced some nice sheephead and black drum recently.
We have caught a few speckled trout on jigs, Mirrolures, and live baits in the creeks and bays of the lower Cape Fear.
Thanks for reading the report and check out the photos from the past few weeks. These are just a few of the good catches we have had recently.
Thanks,
Jeff Wolfe
